Winter is coming — here's how to prep your home now

by Daniel Levy

Late October in Atlantic County means it's time to start thinking about your home before the cold hits. Not after the first freeze. Now.

Here's a practical checklist I give every homeowner I work with heading into fall.

Get your furnace serviced. If you haven't had it looked at in the last year, do it before you need it. An emergency HVAC call in January costs three times what a fall maintenance visit costs.

Check your exterior — specifically caulking around windows and doors. Air infiltration in older South Jersey homes drives up heating bills significantly. A tube of caulk is one of the best investments per dollar in home maintenance.

Clean your dryer vent. This is a fire hazard most homeowners ignore. If it's been more than a year, it's time.

Test your sump pump if you have one. Before the winter rain season, make sure it's working. Flooding in basements is one of the most common insurance claims in Atlantic County.

And if you have any exterior faucets or irrigation systems — drain and shut them down before the first hard freeze.

None of this is complicated. But a home that's maintained properly holds its value better, sells faster when the time comes, and costs you less to own every year.

If you're thinking about selling in the spring and want to know which items actually move the needle for buyers in Atlantic County — reply and let's talk.
